We love Baby Shower games! Not only are they fun and drill up that little competitiveness, but it’s also a great way to get your guests interacting and socializing with people they may not know. Some games can even see your Mother’s working together as a team! So, here’s a list of our top 12 favourite Baby Shower games to play at your next shower… we’ve even found some free printables from Bub Hub for your party supplies!

1. The String Game

This one’s a classic! Each guest takes a length from a ball of string that they think represents the size of the Mama to Be’s baby bump! Mama’s pregnant belly is then measured and the person with a length of string closest to the correct size wins!

2. Baby Bingo!

Baby Bingo is one of my personal favourites, so it takes a few eyes off me while opening gifts! As gifts are being opened, guests will need to check off the items on their bingo card. When they have a row, they shout ‘Bingo!’ and win! Click the link below to print out your free Baby Bingo cards!

3. Jelly Baby Birth

Freeze some Jelly Babies in ice-cubes or shot-glasses and guests need to try and melt their Jelly Babies free, or “give birth” the fastest. Alternatively, one jelly baby can be frozen into water on display and guests have to try and guess what time the baby will be “born” (It’s a good idea to ensure that this one is in the sun or that the ice is thin enough to melt during the Baby Shower.

4. Guess the Baby Food

Baby food comes in some really delicious and also weird tasting combinations. Having guests try to guess the flavours of the foods by either blind-folding them, or un-labelling the foods is always great for laughs and testing baby food palettes!

5. Don’t Cross Your Legs

It used to be said that pregnant mothers should not cross their legs. We know these days that if it’s comfortable to do so and circulation to your legs isn’t compromised, then cross away…. But not in this game! As guests arrive, they have a peg or card and if a guest is seen crossing their legs they must forfeit their peg/card to the person who caught them. The winner is the person with the most pegs/cards by the end of the day.

6. Don’t Say Baby

Much like “Don’t Cross Your Legs” guests have to try not to use the word “Baby” during the whole Baby Shower! If caught, they have to give up their peg and the winner is the person with the most pegs by the end of the day.

7. Nappy Change

Each guest has a doll or bear and has to put a nappy on it the fastest! For an extra challenge, old-fashioned towel nappies with pins can be used (just check that someone present knows how to fold them!)

8. Baby Animals

We know that cats have kittens and that horses have foals… but did you know that platypus have puggles? Guests have to try to match the animal to their babies. Click below to download the baby animal game for free!

9. Baby Celebrities

Much like baby animals, but with famous babies! The host can read out baby names and guests have to note down who they think the famous parent/s might be! To make things easy, we’ve done the celebrity spotting work already and you can download this baby shower game below!

10. Dirty Nappy Game

I’m sure most people have heard of this one and it’s not one of my personal favourites, but an absolute ‘must do’ according to some of our team members. This game sees guests trying to guess a food or chocolate bar that has been melted and squished in a nappy. Guests can use their vision, smell or maybe even a sneaky taste to try and guess the confectionery. It makes for some truly embarrassing pics, so have that camera ready!

11. Spit the Dummy

These next activities are some physically challenging ones but won’t be won by the guest who gyms the most. Spit the Dummy is a game where guests are each given a dummy and have to try to spit it the furthest! Hopefully there won’t be too many tears and tantrums with this game!

12. Drink Up

A game of speed agility… or maybe not so much. Guests need to see who can drink their drink the fastest from a baby’s bottle. We’ve seen this one played at mix-gendered baby showers where the guys are enjoying a few drinks. An especially good one to play before getting some not-so-sober guests to try and put nappies on the fastest!

Foods for Fertility

When you and your partner decide that it’s time for your family to increase by two little feet, you might start wondering what the best things are you can do to prepare. While we know there are plenty of foods to be avoided during pregnancy: what about when trying to conceive? Are there foods for fertility?

What we eat has a huge impact on our body’s ability to function properly and this includes our reproduction system! This doesn’t mean that certain foods can cure fertility issues or that you can combat a bad diet by adding a handful of kale (sorry, we wish it did!). What it does mean is that you can maintain a healthy weight and give your body the nutrients it requires to protect or improve your fertility.

So, what are the ingredients we need to prepare for conception? Hormones, healthy blood, healthy circulation, and a healthy brain – both in mental wellness and also its ability to send messages around the body. A diet rich in healthy fats, healthy carbs, proteins and fresh fruit and vegetables are great all the time but can be particularly important when preparing for pregnancy.

What are some foods for fertility?

Good Fats

Healthy fats decrease inflammation and aid in increased blood flow. Studies have also shown that they lead to an increase in sperm quality for Dad to be! Once pregnant, healthy fats are essential for developing bubs weight increase and to grow nervous system connections.

Where to find healthy fats:

Fatty fish: Salmon – an excellent source of omega-3 which is also a building block for hormones. Our bodies can’t produce omega-3 on its own, so it’s important that it’s included in our diets.
Nuts and Seeds: Flax seeds, walnuts and sunflower seeds are fantastic sources of healthy fats and also omega-3 (perfect to substitute that salmon for our vegetarian friends!).
Avocado: Everyone’s favourite. It’s easy to add to breakfast and salads and full of vitamins and riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium! Yum!
Bad Fats: Trans-fats are the bad guys for our diet. These are usually found in commercial baked goods, fries and snack foods (you know, the delicious things!). These fats increase insulin resistance and won’t be helpful at all for healthy bodies or fertility, so try and limit these in your diet.

Complex Carbohydrates

Carbs… our relationship is complicated! While you wouldn’t need to tell most people twice to stock up on the carbs, again there are some good guys and the bad guys. Good carbs are digested slowly by your body, contain fibres and often fantastic sources of fertility friendly B-vitamins, which support ovum release and uterine implantation.

Where to find healthy carbs:

Quinoa – our favourite replacement for rice and pasta. Quinoa is naturally gluten-free, while also being high in fibre and protein.
Whole grains – brown rice, whole wheat pasta, millet, barley and polenta.
Bad Carbs: Bad carbs… are again probably mostly our delicious favourites, including rice, pasta, cakes, processed breads and cereals. These increase insulin resistance and the body digests these very quickly, leading to spikes in blood sugar and insulin – which in high levels, can inhibit ovulation.

Protein

Protein is an important building block in tissue repair and also for the production of hormones, enzymes and blood cells. So it’s no wonder that proteins are foods for fertility. Maintaining a healthy intake of protein is essential in looking after your body, but also preparing for the development of bub. Like everything in life though – you can have too much of a good thing, and excessive protein intake has been shown to impair fertility in males and females.

Where to find protein:

Lean meats – are high in protein while being low in calories and ‘bad fats’. Poultry is a great source of protein, but also high in selenium (for preventing cell damage), B3 & B6 (for the production of sex hormones and stress relief) and choline (for nerve function and inflammation reduction).
Beans & Lentils – These are not only packed with protein but also iron, folate and fibre!
Tofu – A great plant source of essential amino acids, calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium

Dairy

Dairy full of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B and protein. Research has found that consumption of full-fat dairy products daily can support female fertility, while the low-fat alternatives may be causing damage. This could be due to the increase in sugars used in the low-fat alternatives which cause the spike in insulin that we also see in ‘bad carbs’.

Where to find dairy:

Greek yogurt – packed with protein, calcium and vitamin D (important for regulating menstruation, and balancing sex hormones).
Cheese – cheese made from grass-fed animals is highest in nutrients (vitamins A & B12, zinc, phosphorus and riboflavin) and also contains omega-3.
Vegetarian alternatives – soya beans, peas, lentils, seaweed and leafy greens including spinach, kale, cabbage and brussels sprouts.

Vitamins & Minerals

Fresh fruit and vegetables are absolutely packed with vitamins and minerals that are needed to support a healthy body before, during and after pregnancy. Here, we wanted to tell you about some amazing vitamins and the delish plants they’re found in:

Vitamin E & C well-documented antioxidants, which help remove free-radicals from your body and prevent damage. The protective barrier around your egg follicle is rich in vitamin E for support. Vitamin C may also be linked to your follicle during ovulation. We also know that vitamin C is important for immune health!
Found in: Oranges, Grapefruit, asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower. Also, colourful fruits including blueberries, strawberries and pomegranates.
Folic acid – a super important nutrient for pre-conception and pregnancy. It’s recommended that folic acid supplements be taken by Mamas to be and pregnant women as it improves fertility and assists with spinal tube development in bub.
Found in: spinach, kale and other leafy greens. Dark leafy greens are also amazing sources of iron, which is important for menstruation, ovulation and egg development.
Zinc – zinc is integral to progesterone production, cell division, egg healthy and sperm motility.
Found in: oats, oysters, asparagus, poultry, lentils, nuts and seeds

New Mum Advice: Hospital Bag Essentials

The lead up to the arrival of your newest addition to the family is an amazing journey full of excitement, fear, celebrations and probably more than a few emotional moments. But you’ve done it! You’ve reached the third trimester! While the nursery is probably all decorated and packed and the car seat is installed and ready to go, you maybe haven’t thought about what you’ll need on hand when baby’s birthing day finally arrives. Never fear Mama, we’ve made this list of Hospital Bag Essentials to make it all a little easier for you!

When should I pack my hospital bag?

You want your hospital bag ready to go when your baby is! Keeping an eye on your expectant due date and remember to note if there are any chances that bub might come early. This could be the case for twins, for example. Your OBGYN will certainly let you know all of this and much more detailed for your own pregnancy. Many suggest generally that it’s good to have your bag packed from around week 36, just to be safe.

What to pack…

Your Hospital Bag Essentials list should definitely include:

  1. Cozy, non-slip socks or slippers. Believe me, you don’t want to traverse a hospital barefoot, but you’ll certainly want to keep your toes comfy while you’re walking around the hospital before and after labour
  2. The usual purse suspects: Photo ID, health care and insurance information
  3. Your mobile phone… and your charger!
  4. Comfortable attire – lose-fitting shirts, robes, jumpers and underwear
  5. Maternity bras and nursing pads. Even if you are not planning on breastfeeding, you will definitely appreciate having a little leak protection. Check out our bamboo nursing pads HERE
  6. Non-perishable snacks and change/eftpos card for the vending machine.
  7. Lip balm! You’ll be surprised how dry your mouth gets during labour. Also packing some sugar-free lollies could help too (definitely not sugar lollies though, as they will dehydrate)
  8. Your toothbrush, paste, hair brush, facewash, shampoo and conditioner, and moisturiser
  9. Prescription medication, glasses/contacts if you where them.
  10. Leaving the hospital attire: Matching outfits for mum and bub are total Instagram goals… but there’s a pretty big chance that’ll be lower on your priority list by now! It’s recommended you pack comfortable six-month maternity wear and a blanket and beanie for bub

What should my partner pack?

The partner has an important supporting role during this process and delegating some of those hospital bag essential to hubby will certainly help. He should remember:

  1. A shirt that he doesn’t mind losing. He’ll want to hold bub and also enjoy skin to skin interactions, but if you’re having your partner present at the birth, there’s a good chance he’ll be in a shirt that gets damaged or soiled (not to mention that you may be pulling on it a tad during labour). This is the number one item we hear from new Dads that they wish they knew they needed sooner!
  2. His belongings – changes of clothes, toiletries, phone and charger (a battery charger for your phone too), a camera, snacks!
  3. Something to keep you both distracted or entertained during down times – perhaps a book, puzzle, podcast or something to watch
  4. The car seat! To take baby home, you’ll need to ensure you have a ride home with a suitable, safe and correctly installed car seat for your newest addition
